Crochet Ear Warmer with a Twist

I love making crochet headbands to keep my ears warm in the winter. They are easy to wear with lots of different hairstyles, like ponytails or messy buns.

Though the front twist may look complicated, I promise that it’s really easy to do. The headband itself is worked flat in rows. It’s joined into a loop with one simple seam. And, the clever design of the seam creates the look of a twist.

So, if you know how to crochet a rectangle, you can definitely make this ear warmer. Let’s get to it.

What size should my ear warmer be?

If you’re making your crochet ear warmer or headband as a gift, be sure to pay attention to the size. How wide an ear warmer or headband should be will depend on the pattern and your preference, but around 4 -5inches (10-12 cm) is a good starting point. .

What is ‘negative ease’ in a crochet ear warmer pattern?

In general, stretchy ear warmers need about 2″ (5 cm) negative ease, depending on stitch pattern and stretchiness. (Beginner’s Note: “ease” in a crochet patterns means the difference in size between what you’re making and your body. “Negative ease” means that your project will come out smaller than your body, but don’t worry – it will stretch!)

Stitch Guide

How to Crochet a Puff Stitch

Wrap the yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the stitch. Yarn over again and draw up a loop. You should have three loops on your hook.

This is the beginning of a half double crochet stitch. Instead of drawing the yarn through these loops, continue to the next step.

Yarn over, insert your hook through the same stitch, yarn over, and then draw up another loop. You should have five loops on the hook.

Advertisements

Repeat the previous step until you have nine loops on your hook.

When you have nine loops on the hook, yarn over and draw it through all the loops. Depending on how tight the stitches are, this can be a little tricky at first because every other loop (the yarn overs before you insert the hook) is smaller than the others. Draw the hook through, wiggling it a little as needed, to avoid pulling those loops.

With the loop pulled through the puff stitch, make a single chain. This secures the puff stitch, keeps the stitch more upright, and creates the space to work into on the next row.

How to crochet a front post half double crochet stitich (FPhdc)

Working around the front of a post of the previous row gives an interesting raised ridge on the crochet fabric. Around-the-post crochet is worked by inserting the hook from the front and around the post of the crochet stitch of the previous row.

Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front around post of corresponding stitch below, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

Important Notes for the crochet headband-earwarmer pattern

Advertisements
  • Written in standard U.S. terms.
  • This pattern for the teen/woman size, starts by chaining a multiple of nine plus two stitches .
  • You can also easily adjust the sizing by working more or less stitches or more or less rows! To adjust the length, repeat rows 4-5 as many times as necessary to reach your desired width. To adjust the width, add more or less foundation double crochet stitches to row (make sure you are making multiple of nine plus two stitches).
  • If you are wanting to make crochet headbands ear warmers for adults or an adult size, you will need to measure the circumference of their head first, since the size can vary so much from person to person. This way, you will ensure the crochet headband size fits the person it is intended for making enough rows to fit the headband size.
