Sometimes simple crochet stitches make the most elegant designs. This soft slouchy hat pattern comes in sizes from baby to large adult. Although his hat is simple to make, it has a beautiful texture and fashionable style.
The versatility of this crochet beanie pattern is one of my favorite parts. You can make the hat longer or shorter depending on how much slouch you want.

Lisa Beanie is crocheted with DK weight yarn which is perfect for those of you who live in slightly warmer climates where you still want to look cozy but not melt. However they should still work well for people who are in cooler areas too.

How to Measure for Crochet Hat Patterns
Are you giving a crochet hat or beanie as a gift? You’ll need to know what size to make before you start crocheting.
If at all possible, it’s best to measure the circumference of the intended recipient’s head. Then, you can reference the pattern to figure out what size to make.
Depending on the pattern, you may be able to adjust the length or “slouchiness” of your beanie.
Notes for the Lisa Beanie Crochet Pattern
- Pattern is written in American English terms.
- This beanie’s construction consists of one stretchy headband piece, worked in rows back and forth, seamed together and the body of the hat worked into the sides of the rows of the stretchy hat band. This makes modifying the hat easy to accommodate a variety of head sizes.
- The rows of the band need to be worked in a multiple of 2 to maintain the same stitch count as the pattern calls for. So, if you want to make this larger, or smaller you simply need to work more or less rows.
- Chains at beginning of round do not count as stitch.
- When working the body of the hat (the half double crochet rounds) it is very important to do not forget after you join the rounds and chain 1, to turn the work (to work in the opposite direction).
- This pattern can be made longer or shorter based on your preference, if you want to make this longer, or shorter you simply need to work more or less roonds in the hat body.
- Keep your tension very relaxed, if you need you can use one size biger crochet hook.
- Weave in ends as needed.

Special Crochet Stitches
Working in the back loop only (blo): when you crochet a row of single crochet or half double crochet stitches and look at the top, you’ll see how those little Vs form the stitches you crochet into. When you hold the piece of crochet in front of you with the Vs on top, the part of the V closest to you is the front loop. The part of the V farther away from you on the opposite side is the back loop. To crochet in the back loop of a stitch, insert your crochet hook underneath the back loop only and make the stitch as indicated in the pattern.
Decrease (DEC):
- Step 1: Yarn over hook and insert hook into the first stitch (under the back loop in our pattern) from the row below. Yarn over and pull up a loop. …
- Step 2: Insert hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. …
- Step 3: YO hook and pull through all four loops on your hook.
Terminology (US Terms)
ch = chain
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
scblo = single crochet back loop only
hdc = half double crochet
yo = yarn over
hdc2tog = half double crochet two together
DEC = decrease
Gauge
The elastic band: 7 rows/8 scblo = 2”/2” (5 cm)
The body of the hat: 10 rows/16 hdc blo =4”/4” (10 cm)
Baby Size Crochet Beanie Pattern (14-16” circumference/6-6.5” height)
The elastic band: chain 6
Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook. Continue working until the end of the chain (5 sts)
Starting row 2, we’ll be working in the back loop only. To avoid loops at the edge, the last stitch of each row will be worked using both top loops.
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, scblo in each st until the end, working the last st in both top loops. (5 scblo sts)
Row 3 – 48: repeat row 2
The band should wrap comfortably around your head at this point. If it seems too big, or you want a tighter hat you are welcome to leave off some of the final rows. If you want a little larger, add some more rows to the desired lenght.
Do not cut yarn! Continue with the Seam!
SEAM: Fold the piece into half, hold row 1 edge above the last row edge. Chain 1 and slip stitch the short sides together inserting the hook through the back loops of the stitches on both sides; ch1 and turn the piece inside out, so that the seam will be hidden on the wrong side.
The body of the hat
Work in the round around the edge.
Round 1: Chain 1, work around the edge 48 hdc st (working one st into each “rib” st and one st into each “valley” st on the edge); join round with sl st to top of first hdc st. (48 hdc sts)
Round 2: Chain 1 and TURN, work one hdc blo in the first st and in each st around. (48 hdc blo sts)
Round 3-11: repeat round 2.
Round 12: Chain 1 and TURN, [work one hdc blo in the next 3 sts, DEC in the next] repeat to the end of the round. (39 hdc blo sts)
Round 13: Chain 1 and TURN, [work one hdc blo in the next 2 sts, DEC in the next] repeat to the end of the round. (30 hdc blo sts)
Round 14: Chain 1 and TURN, [work one hdc blo in the next st , DEC in the next] repeat to the end of the round. (20 hdc blo sts)
Round 15: Chain 1 and TURN, DEC in each st to the end of the round. (10 hdc blo sts)
Fasten off, cut the yarn leaving a yarn tail of 10” long. Using tapestry needle and the yarn tail, whip stitch around the top of the hat. Tighten circle as much as possible and use tapestry needle to sew up any remaining opening in top of hat.
Weave in all remaining ends of the hat with the yarn needle! Attach a faux fur pompom on the top for decoration (optional).
Toddler Size Crohet Beanie Pattern (16-17” circumference/6.5-7.5” height)
The elastic band:
Row 1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook. Continue working until the end of the chain (6 sts)
Starting row 2 we’ll be working in the back loop only. To avoid loops at the edge, the last stitch of each row will be worked using both top loops.
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, scblo in each st until the end, working the last st in both top loops. (6 scblo sts)
Row 3 – 56: repeat row 2.
The band should wrap comfortably around your head at this point. If it seems too big, or you want a tighter hat you are welcome to leave off some of the final rows. If you want a little larger, add some more rows to the desired lenght.
Do not cut yarn! Continue with the Seam!
SEAM: Fold the piece into half, hold Row 1 edge above the last row edge. Chain 1 and slip stitch the short sides together inserting the hook through the back loops of the stitches on both sides; ch1 and turn the piece inside out, so that the seam will be hidden on the wrong side.
Continue working the Body of Hat on the right side.

Round 3-13: repeat round 2.
Round 14: Chain 1 and TURN, [work one hdc blo in the next 3 sts, DEC in the next] repeat to the end of the round. (45 hdc blo sts)
Round 15: Chain 1 and TURN, [work one hdc blo in the next 2 sts, DEC in the next] repeat to the end of the round. (34 hdc blo sts)
Round 16: Chain 1 and TURN, [work one hdc blo in the next st , DEC in the next] repeat to the end of the round. (23 hdc blo sts)
Round 17: Chain 1 and TURN, DEC in each st to the end of the round. (12 hdc blo sts)
Fasten off, cut the yarn leaving a yarn tail of 10” long. Using tapestry needle and the yarn tail, whip stitch around the top of the hat. Tighten circle as much as possible and use tapestry needle to sew up any remaining opening in top of hat.

Child Size Crochet Beanie Pattern (17-19” circumference/7.5-8” height)

Teen Size Pattern (19-20” circumference/8-8.5” height)
The elastic band:
Row 1: Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook. Continue working until the end of the chain (6 sts)
Starting row 2, to avoid loops at the edge, the last stitch of each row will be worked using both top loops.
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, scblo in each st until the end, working the last st in both top loops. (8 scblo sts)
Row 3 – 68: repeat row 2.
