How to Measure Hat Size

Measuring a crochet hat is easy. You’ll need a soft tape measure, so you can get the circumference of the head. For example, if you want to make a men’s crochet hat you would crochet your hat to a width of 22 to 24 inches with a 9 or 9.5 inch height more than likely, but measuring that person’s head will give you an exact measurement. The same thing goes any size of crochet hat you want to make from the chart.

The best is to always measure the circumference of the persons head you want to make the hat or beanie for because their size may differ from the standard sizes on the chart. If it is not possible to measure, then you can go by the standard chart above when crocheting the hat.

NOTES ABOUT THE HAT PATTERN

Turning chains are not included in stitch count.

Brim of hat is worked in rows and then joined to form a circle.

Body of hat is worked in rounds from the bottom up

The hat body of this pattern is worked in multiples of 4. The size can be increased or decreased based on that number. Be sure to adjust your band longer or shorter to match.

Yarn Notes: Burkum Klasick from Alize were used for the samples. Another comparable weight yarn may be used as long as gauge is met.

Pattern Repeats:  In the crochet instructions you’ll see: rep from ( to ) around. The instructions written within the ( ) parentheses are one full pattern repeat. You are to repeat these around the entire hat. The stitch pattern will repeat evenly so you should not have any stitches remaining at the end of each round.

The band should wrap comfortably around your head at this point. If it seems too big you are welcome to leave off some of the final rows, but be sure to adjust your stitches in round 1 below to maintain the same stitch count as the pattern calls for.

If you have a smaller head, or prefer a tighter fit for your hat, then you will want to omit a few rows from the band. This is very easy to do just as long as you maintain the same stitch count number the pattern calls for in the first round, worked along the edge of the band rows.
