Crocheting is an incredibly versatile craft, and there’s something special about making your own kitchen accessories. If you love both practicality and creativity in your crochet projects, a bubble stitch crochet hot pad/pot holder is the perfect addition to your home. Not only does it protect your surfaces from hot pots and pans, but it also adds a unique, textured look to your kitchen. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the process of creating your very own bubble stitch hot pad/pot holder from start to finish.

Crocheting your own kitchen accessories is both fun and practical. The bubble stitch is a wonderful textured stitch that gives a pop of interest to your creations. In this tutorial, we will guide you through making your own bubble stitch crochet hot pad or pot holder, and finish it off with a beautiful border that ties everything together.
What You’ll Need to Make the Bubble Potholder/Hot Pad
Yarn: For this project, you can use cotton yarn because it is heat-resistant and durable, making it perfect for kitchen accessories. Choose a medium-weight yarn (like worsted weight) for the best results. You can also opt for multiple colors for a fun, vibrant design!
Crochet Hook: A 4.5 mm crochet hook works well for worsted weight yarn, but make sure to check your yarn’s recommended hook size.
Tapestry Needle: To weave in your ends.
Scissors: For cutting your yarn at the end.
Optional: A hot pad hanger or loop to hang the pot holder on a hook.
Stitches You’ll Use:
Bubble Stitch– Double Crochet 4 Together (dc4tog): The star of this project! The bubble stitch creates a textured, raised “bubble” in the fabric, giving the pot holder a lovely 3D effect. We’ll explain how to do it below.
Chain (ch): The foundation stitch of most crochet projects.
Single Crochet (sc): A simple and sturdy stitch that makes up the bulk of the hot pad.
Pattern Overview:
- Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in each chain.
- Row 2: Sc in the first stitch, bubble stitch in the next, sc in the next, bubble stitch in the next, repeat across the row.
- Row 3: Single crochet across the entire row.
The bubble stitch is worked by crocheting 4 double crochet stitches together (dc4tog), which creates a raised bubble in the fabric. After each bubble, you work a single crochet stitch to keep the structure intact.
Instructions to Make the Bubble Potholder/Hot Pad:
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Begin Your Foundation Chain
Start by making a slip knot and chaining 26 (or any multiple of 2 for the desired size of your hot pad). For a standard-sized hot pad, 26 hains should work, but feel free to adjust it based on how large you want the pad.
Step 2: Row 1 – Single Crochet Across
In the second chain from the hook, single crochet across the entire row. You should have 25 single crochet stitches at the end of this row. Turn your work.
Step 3: Row 2 – Bubble Stitches and Single Crochets
Now, we’ll introduce the bubble stitch into our pattern!
- Start with a single crochet stitch in the first stitch.
- Create the bubble stitch in the next stitch by working a dc4tog:
- Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch.
- Yarn over again and pull through, so you have three loops on the hook.
- Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook (leaving two loops).
- Repeat this process 3 more times, inserting your hook into the same stitch each time, so you have a total of 4 unfinished double crochet stitches.
- Finally, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook to complete the bubble stitch.
- Single crochet in the next stitch after the bubble stitch.
- Repeat the sequence of: bubble stitch, single crochet, bubble stitch across the entire row.
At the end of this row, chain 1 turn your work.
Step 4: Row 3 – Single Crochet Across
In this row, you’ll single crochet across all the stitches. This helps to even out the texture of the previous row and gives a nice solid base for the next set of bubbles.
Step 5: Repeat the Pattern
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for the desired length of your hot pad. For a standard pot holder, 6-8 rows will give you a nice square shape. Feel free to make it larger or smaller depending on your needs.
Step 6: Work the Border of the Hot Pad/Potholder
Once you have finished the last row, do not cut the yarn. Instead, continue working the border around the edges of your hot pad. Here’s how to create the border:
Round 1:
- Start by working 1 single crochet in the edge of each row.
- When you reach the corner stitch, work the following into the last stitch of each corner:
- 1 single crochet, chain 1, and 1 single crochet into the same stitch. This will give the corner a rounded finish.
- Continue working 1 single crochet in each stitch along each side, ensuring that the corners have the 3-stitch combination (sc, ch 1, sc) to keep the shape square or rectangular.
Round 2:
- Once you’ve completed Round 1, slip stitch into the first stitch of Round 1.
- Then, chain 1 and work a slip stitch , continue working a slip stitch and chain 1 each each stitch around the entire border.
- This will give your hot pad a neat, clean, and finished look.
Step 7: Finish Off
Once you’ve completed the border, fasten off the yarn by cutting it and leaving a small tail. Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
