There’s something magical about the texture of a handmade hat—the kind of stitch that catches the light just right and adds a little personality to your winter wardrobe. That’s exactly what I had in mind when I designed the Pebbles Beanie.
Inspired by the gentle, bumpy texture of river pebbles, this crochet beanie combines warmth, structure, and visual interest into one quick and satisfying project. Whether you’re looking for a last-minute gift or just want to treat yourself to a new hat, this pattern is beginner-friendly and works up fast!
And if you’re more of a visual learner, I’ve got you covered: there’s a full step-by-step video tutorial available on YouTube to guide you through every stitch.
There’s nothing better than a handmade hat—especially one that fits just right and adds that perfect touch of texture. I’m so excited to share the Pebbles Beanie pattern with you, a cozy and stylish hat that features a fun, bumpy texture inspired by smooth river pebbles.
And the best part? This pattern includes sizes for the whole family—from tiny babies to adults—so you can make a matching set or whip up thoughtful gifts for all ages.
✨ What Makes the Pebbles Beanie Special?
The star of this pattern is the pebble stitch, a simple combination of post stitches and basic techniques that creates a beautiful, nubby texture—like soft little pebbles across your fabric. It adds dimension and style without being too bulky, and it looks just as great in solid yarns as it does in variegated or tweeds.
✨ Why You’ll Love the Pebbles Beanie
The standout feature of this beanie is the pebble stitch—a simple combination of post stitches and basic crochet that creates a rich, touchable texture. It looks intricate but is actually quite beginner-friendly, making it a satisfying project whether you’re a new crocheter or a seasoned pro.
This stitch shines in both solid and variegated yarns and gives the hat a unique look that sets it apart from the usual beanies.

Notes about the Pebble Crochet Beanie Hat Pattern:
- This pattern is worked in rounds in US terminology.
- Chain 1 from the beginning of each round doesn’t count as a stitch.
- If you desire a larger hat, then you can add more foundation chain stitches to the initial chain. The initial foundation chain is a multiple of 2, so you need to add an even number of stitches and add one more chain, if you want to make this longer, or shorter you simply need to work more or less rounds in the hat body.
- Keep your tension very relaxed, if you need you can use one size bigger crochet hook.
- If a different weight brand of yarn or gauge isn’t followed, then the hat will not turn out the same size as written.
- Weave in ends as needed.
🧵 Customization Ideas
- Go classic with earthy neutrals or make it pop with bright, playful colors
- Add a faux fur pom for a trendy touch
- Use natural fibers for a cozy, breathable winter hat—or opt for acrylics for easy care and gifting

Abbreviations
Pattern is written in US terms.
- stitch(es) – st(s)
- slip stitch – sl st
- single crochet – sc
- half double crochet – hdc
- back loop only -blo
- chain(s) – ch(s)
- YO – yarn over
Gauge: 16sts (alternating pebble sts and sl sts) /16 rows (alternating pebbles row and single crochet back loop only row) = 4” /4” (10 cm/10cm)
Stitches Used
Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook into designated stitch, YO (yarn over) and pull back through the st and through the loop on the hook.
Half Double crochet (hdc): YO, insert your hook into designated stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all three loops on the hook.
Special Stitches
Pebble Stitch: insert the hook in the designated stitch, yarn over, pull the yarn through (2 loops on the hook), yarn over, insert the hook in the same stitch, yarn over, pull the yarn through (4 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through all loops on the hook.
Single Crochet Decrease (sc2tog): insert the hook into the designated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. There should be three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
Working in the back loop only (blo): when you crochet a row of crochet stitches and look at the top, you’ll see how those little Vs form the stitches you crochet into. When you hold the piece of crochet in front of you with the Vs on top, the part of the V closest to you is the front loop. The part of the V farther away from you on the opposite side is the back loop. To crochet in the back loop of a stitch, insert your crochet hook underneath the back loop only and make the stitch as indicated in the pattern.

Hdc in the 3rd loop in the round: When crocheting in the 3rd loop in the round, the 3rd loop you’ll be working in, will be at the back of the stitch facing away from you. When it’s done correctly, working in the 3rd loop pushes the top of the stitch toward the outside of the design. It will create a ridge that looks like knitted around the outside of your design.

Working in the back bump of the chains: to find the back bump, simply turn the chain over and find the single bump on the back of the chain. This back bump is where you will insert your hook to make your first row of stitches! You make your stitches as usual; you’re just working into a slightly different part of the chain. As a result, the “V” from the front of the starting chain will now be your bottom edge.
